# Creating and Opening Timelines

Add the Timeline View, create Timeline objects from the view or Project Tree, and use selection or locking to work with multiple Timelines.

Timelines are displayed and edited in the dedicated **Timeline View**. A project can contain multiple Timeline objects, and multiple Timeline Views can be used to work with different Timelines at the same time.

***

## Adding the Timeline View

Before working with Timelines, add a **Timeline View** to your Grid Studio layout.

1. Open **View → Timeline**.
2. Add the Timeline View.
3. Drag and dock the view into the desired position in your layout.

If no Timeline exists or is currently selected, the Timeline View is shown without Timeline content.

## Creating a Timeline

A Timeline is stored as an object in the **Project Tree**.

There are three ways to create a new Timeline.

### Create from an empty Timeline View

If the Timeline View does not currently contain a Timeline, click the large **Create Timeline** button in the center of the view.

A new Timeline object is created and added to the Project Tree.

### Create from the Timeline View selector

Open the Timeline selector at the top of the Timeline View and select **Add Timeline**.

The newly created Timeline is added to the Project Tree.

### Create from the Project Tree

A Timeline can also be created directly from the **Project Tree** using its **Create** menu.

Select **Timeline** to add a new Timeline object to the project.

## Opening a Timeline

By default, the Timeline View follows the current selection.

Select a **Timeline object** in the Project Tree to display it in the Timeline View.

Selecting a different Timeline object updates the view to show the newly selected Timeline.

## Locking a Timeline View

A Timeline View can be **locked** to a specific Timeline.

When a view is locked, changing the selection in the Project Tree does not change the Timeline displayed in that view.

<figure><img src="https://1761958297-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FDcGqBEYUYkl2mQzGbOue%2Fuploads%2FA3MhraKEE587CH55Yzpt%2FGrid_Studio_Timeline2_VPTPfsYa8Z.gif?alt=media&amp;token=df045552-7088-4e58-8b0a-faedc5978e2c" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

This makes it possible to use multiple Timeline Views at the same time, with each view dedicated to a different Timeline.
