# Timeline Cues

Create and manage Timeline Cues for markers, playback control, navigation, jumps, pauses, and Cue-based Timeline sequencing.

Timeline Cues are placed directly on the **Timeline ruler** and can be used as markers or to control Timeline playback and navigation.

Grid Studio provides five Cue types:

* **Info**
* **Play**
* **Pause**
* **Jump to Time**
* **Jump to Cue**

The Cue type can also be changed later from the Inspector.

***

## Creating Cues

There are two ways to create a Cue.

#### Create a Cue from the Ruler

Double-click directly on the Timeline ruler to create a Cue at the clicked time.

A Cue created this way is an **Info Cue** by default.

#### Create a Cue from the Timeline Menu

Open the **Add Timeline Cues** menu in the Timeline View and select the desired Cue type.

<figure><img src="https://1761958297-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FDcGqBEYUYkl2mQzGbOue%2Fuploads%2FzeVhPy4sRrwtCuwHoHvQ%2FVYDjj5epXk.gif?alt=media&amp;token=54339564-1ee0-419b-ba6b-c0cf81a50273" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

When a Cue is created from this menu, it is placed at the current **Playhead position**.

## Selecting and Editing Cues

Click a Cue on the ruler to select it.

A selected Cue is displayed slightly darker, and its settings are shown in the **Inspector**.

#### Show Text

Enable **Show Text** to display the Cue name directly next to its marker on the Timeline ruler.

<div align="left"><figure><img src="https://1761958297-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FDcGqBEYUYkl2mQzGbOue%2Fuploads%2FV1VxtPa8IB7PE0eLLbYk%2FPowerToys_SYSCOUyj4t.gif?alt=media&amp;token=6ca105e0-b4b3-4c21-b35c-19e3c2678a95" alt="" width="493"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

#### Name

The Cue name can be changed by double-clicking its name in the Inspector or Timeline ruler.

<div align="left"><figure><img src="https://1761958297-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FDcGqBEYUYkl2mQzGbOue%2Fuploads%2FxT5L5MD2ENWjdIyKTLqh%2FCwN0OJNHs9.gif?alt=media&amp;token=3e5d2e21-137a-4d61-b204-ff0b07e09d37" alt="" width="493"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

#### Time

The **Time** property defines the position of the Cue on the Timeline.

<div align="left"><figure><img src="https://1761958297-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FDcGqBEYUYkl2mQzGbOue%2Fuploads%2FgZNj2CciKN7qM8543VEU%2FhZa11qwFbX.gif?alt=media&amp;token=24bed204-8876-40bf-9a53-d2b9ce3a78d7" alt="" width="493"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

When the Cue is not locked, it can also be moved directly on the ruler using drag and drop.

For precise positioning, enter the desired time directly in the Inspector.

#### Locked

Enable **Locked** to prevent the Cue from being moved with the mouse on the Timeline ruler.

<div align="left"><figure><img src="https://1761958297-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FDcGqBEYUYkl2mQzGbOue%2Fuploads%2FfE9xsIUeZJ3Ce51wTk1h%2F62qqSU2824.gif?alt=media&amp;token=b0d4d0ae-bef8-4d7c-b53d-579cfc9d751e" alt="" width="493"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

The Cue position can still be viewed and managed through the Inspector.

#### Type

The **Type** property can be used to change an existing Cue to another Cue type.

Available types are:

* Play
* Pause
* Jump to Time
* Jump to Cue
* Info

## Duplicating and Deleting Cues

#### Duplicate a Cue

Select the Cue on the ruler and press:

<kbd>**CTRL + D**</kbd>

#### Delete a Cue

Select the Cue on the ruler and press:

<kbd>**DEL**</kbd>

***

## Info Cue

An **Info Cue** primarily acts as a marker or reference point on the Timeline.

It does not perform a major playback action by itself.

Info Cues are useful as destinations for Cue navigation, for example when jumping to a specific point in the Timeline using:

* **Jump to Cue**
* Timeline control actions
* **Jump to Previous Cue**
* **Jump to Next Cue**

***

## Play Cue

A **Play Cue** can start Timeline playback when it is used as the destination of a **Jump to Cue** while the Timeline is not currently playing.

Playback then starts from the Play Cue position.

If the Timeline is already playing and the Playhead passes a Play Cue normally, the Cue has no additional effect.

***

## Pause Cue

A **Pause Cue** pauses a free-running Timeline when the Playhead reaches the Cue.

Playback can then be resumed from the same position.

A Pause Cue does not stop a Timeline that is currently being driven by external Timecode.

***

## Jump to Time

A **Jump to Time** Cue moves the Playhead to a specific Timeline time when the Cue is reached.

#### Jump Time

**Jump Time** defines the destination time.

#### Pause after Jump

When **Pause after Jump** is disabled, playback continues immediately from the destination time.

When enabled, the Timeline pauses after arriving at the destination.

***

## Jump to Cue

A **Jump to Cue** Cue moves the Playhead to the position of another Cue.

#### Jump Cue

Use **Jump Cue** to select the Cue that should be used as the destination.

The destination can be located either before or after the current Cue.

This makes it possible to create repeating sections or loop-like navigation within a Timeline.

#### Pause after Jump

When **Pause after Jump** is disabled, playback continues immediately from the destination Cue position.

When enabled, the Timeline pauses after the jump.

#### Destination Cue Behavior

Jumping to another Cue only uses its position.

The function of the destination Cue itself is not executed.

For example:

* Jumping to a **Pause Cue** does not automatically pause the Timeline.
* Jumping to another **Jump to Cue** does not execute the second jump.
* A destination **Play Cue** does not trigger an additional playback action while the Timeline is already playing.

Use **Pause after Jump** when the Timeline should pause after reaching the destination.

***

## Previous and Next Cue Navigation

The Timeline View provides:

* **Jump to Previous Cue**
* **Jump to Next Cue**

These controls move the Playhead to the previous or next Cue regardless of its Cue type.

Only the Cue position is used.

The function of the destination Cue is not executed.

***

## Cues and External Timecode

When a Timeline is driven by **external Timecode**, the incoming Timecode controls the Timeline position.

This means that Timeline navigation cannot permanently override the externally supplied position.

For example:

* **Jump to Time** is overwritten by the external Timecode.
* **Jump to Cue** is overwritten by the external Timecode.
* **Pause Cue** cannot hold the Timeline at its Cue position while external Timecode continues to drive it.
