# Editing Recorded Data

Edit recorded Takes by moving, trimming, and duplicating Recording Blocks, or convert optimized recordings into individual Keyframes for detailed manual editing.

Recorded data does not have to remain exactly where it was originally captured.

Recording Blocks can be moved, trimmed, duplicated, and reorganized directly on the Timeline before replay or export.

Grid Studio stores recordings in an optimized format by default, so individual recorded samples do not need to be exposed as editable Keyframes unless manual Keyframe editing is actually required.

## Moving Recording Blocks

Drag a Recording Block to move it to another position on the Timeline.

The recorded data moves together with the Block.

This new Timeline position is also used for replay and export.

If the Block is later exported, its timestamps reflect the **current Timeline position**, not the original recording position.

***

## Trimming Recording Blocks

Use the handles at the beginning and end of a Recording Block to change its active time range.

Trimming a Block changes which part of the recording is used during replay and export.

This makes it possible to remove unwanted sections from the beginning or end of a Take without converting the recording into individual Keyframes.

***

## Duplicating Recording Blocks

Recording Blocks can be duplicated and placed at different positions on the Timeline.

A duplicated Block contains the same recorded data as the original, but its playback and export timing follows its new Timeline position.

For example, if the same Recording Block is placed three times at different positions in one Parameter Layer, the recorded motion will also appear three times at those positions during playback and export.

***

## Optimized Recording Data

Grid Studio stores recordings in a performance-optimized format.

The recording is not automatically expanded into thousands of individually editable Keyframes.

This keeps recording and playback efficient, especially for longer Takes or objects containing many Parameters.

The optimized recording can be:

* replayed directly
* moved or trimmed
* duplicated
* exported

without first converting it into regular Keys.

***

## Convert Recordings to Keys

If individual recorded values need to be inspected or manually edited, right-click the Parameter Layer and select:

**Convert all recordings to keys**

This converts the optimized recording data into regular Timeline Keyframes.

The individual Keys can then be viewed and edited separately.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Only convert recordings to individual Keys when detailed manual Keyframe editing is actually required.

The optimized recording format is significantly more efficient for normal recording, replay, and export workflows.
{% endhint %}

{% hint style="info" %}
Conversion to Keys is **not required for export**.

CSV, FBX, and Shield recordings can be exported directly from the optimized recording data.
{% endhint %}

## Editing Individual Keys

After converting a recording to Keys, the individual Parameter Keyframes can be edited using the normal Parameter Layer Keyframe tools.

This allows values and timing to be adjusted manually when required.

For detailed Keyframe editing behavior, see the **Parameter Layer** documentation.

## Edits and Export

Export always reflects the current arrangement of the recording data on the Timeline.

This includes changes such as:

* moving Recording Blocks
* trimming Blocks
* duplicating Blocks
* rearranging multiple recording sections

The original recording position is not preserved separately once the Block has been repositioned for export.
