# Your first point data

Receive simulated point data from Grid Studio, display it as spheres, and render the result in TouchDesigner.

This example uses a Volume with a Test Map Input in Grid Studio to generate moving points.

In TouchDesigner, the SPNet Point Cloud POP turns those points into sphere geometry. A simple camera and render setup produces the final image.

### 1. Prepare the test data in Grid Studio

Create the test setup described in **Send point clouds from Grid Studio**:

1. Add an **SPNet Object** and configure it as a **Sender**.
2. Set its destination to `237.37.37.37` and UDP port to `37373`.
3. Add a **Volume** near the world origin.
4. In the Volume's Maps section, add a **Volume Test Map Input**.
5. Add an **SPNet Point Data Map Output** and assign your SPNet Sender.
6. Use **Global** coordinates for the output.

Configure the Test Map Input:

| Parameter   | Value    |
| ----------- | -------- |
| Point Count | `3`      |
| Move Points | `Bounce` |
| Size        | `0.25`   |

Set Speed to a positive value and keep the test Volume small enough to view easily.

Confirm that the points are moving inside the Volume, then start sending SPNet.

```
Test Map Input
    → Volume
    → SPNet Point Data Map Output
    → SPNet Sender
    → TouchDesigner
```

### 2. Add the Point Cloud POP

In TouchDesigner:

1. In `/project1`, create a **Geometry COMP** or use the existing one.
2. Enter the Geometry COMP.
3. Open the **OP Create Dialog**, select **Custom**, and add **SPNet Point Cloud**.

### 3. Configure the connection

Select `spnet_points` and open its **Connection** page.

<div align="left"><figure><img src="https://2603562454-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FpqFgDkRbISUDHHzKu5sG%2Fuploads%2Fk496ltNEXscoz6C1yHUV%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=0d92e4b2-f7a9-4bc0-98ed-46528784eaca" alt="" width="376"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

| Parameter         | Value          |
| ----------------- | -------------- |
| Port              | `37373`        |
| Bind Address      | `0.0.0.0`      |
| Multicast Group   | `237.37.37.37` |
| Interface Address | `0.0.0.0`      |

These settings match the SPNet Sender in Grid Studio.

{% hint style="info" %}
If your computer has multiple network adapters, set Interface Address to the local IPv4 address of the adapter receiving SPNet.
{% endhint %}

### 4. Display the points as spheres

Open the POP's **Points** page.

<div align="left"><figure><img src="https://2603562454-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FpqFgDkRbISUDHHzKu5sG%2Fuploads%2Fk74k20VJwAEHVnQaLvR6%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=83905227-b198-43c9-b409-c2db56213017" alt="" width="377"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

| Parameter   | Value     |
| ----------- | --------- |
| Output Mode | `Spheres` |
| Use Size    | `On`      |
| Use Color   | `On`      |

The generated points should now appear as moving spheres in the POP's viewer.

<div align="left"><figure><img src="https://2603562454-files.gitbook.io/~/files/v0/b/gitbook-x-prod.appspot.com/o/spaces%2FpqFgDkRbISUDHHzKu5sG%2Fuploads%2Fwv1agEN2bBwKbZwTrHRo%2Fimage.png?alt=media&amp;token=bd8be6e2-fe43-4ba7-b36d-9b06868464ac" alt="" width="563"><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

Use Size applies the incoming XYZ dimensions. A size of `0.25` on all three axes produces a sphere measuring `0.25` meters across.

Use Color applies the colors supplied by the source.

{% hint style="info" %}
A size of `1, 1, 1` produces a sphere with a diameter of one meter.
{% endhint %}

### 5. Add a material

Return to `/project1`.

1. Create a **Constant MAT** named `pointcloud_mat`.
2. Set its Color to white.
3. Enable **Apply Point Color**.
4. Select `pointcloud_geo`.
5. On its **Render** page, set **Material** to `/project1/pointcloud_mat`.
6. Ensure the Geometry COMP's Render parameter and Render flag are enabled.

The Constant MAT displays the point colors without requiring lights. Apply Point Color allows the material to use the color attributes generated by the POP.

### 6. Render the result

In `/project1`:

1. Create a **Camera COMP** named `pointcloud_camera`.
2. Set its Translate XYZ to `0, 0, 5`.
3. Set its Rotate XYZ to `0, 0, 0`.
4. Create a **Render TOP** named `pointcloud_render`.
5. Assign `/project1/pointcloud_camera` as its camera.
6. Assign `/project1/pointcloud_geo` as its geometry.

View `pointcloud_render`.

This camera setup faces the world origin. Adjust its position if your test Volume is larger or located elsewhere.

### 7. Show point IDs

Select `spnet_points` inside the Geometry COMP and open its **Labels** page.

| Parameter     | Value  |
| ------------- | ------ |
| Draw IDs      | `On`   |
| ID Label Size | `0.25` |

The POP adds labels showing the received point IDs. These labels are rendered together with the spheres.

Adjust ID Label Size to suit the size of your scene.

### Check the result

While Grid Studio continues sending:

* Change **Point Count** to change the number of generated spheres.
* Change **Size** to adjust their dimensions.
* Change **Speed** to adjust their movement.
* Switch Move Points from **Bounce** to **Line** to test another movement pattern.
* Toggle **Draw IDs** in TouchDesigner to show or hide the labels.

{% hint style="info" %}
Spheres mode creates a mesh for each received point. The POP's displayed point count includes the generated mesh vertices and will therefore be larger than the number of SPNet points.
{% endhint %}

If nothing appears in the POP viewer, check that the Test Map Input generates points, the Map Output references the correct SPNet Sender, and the connection settings match.

If the POP viewer shows geometry but the render is empty, check the camera position, geometry selection, and Render flags.
