Tally

The Tally actions display a colored frame overlay on a screen to visually indicate the status of a system. This concept originates from broadcast environments, where tally indicators are used to signal when a camera or device is active or on air.

Grid Studio provides two actions for controlling the tally indicator:

  • Tally Show – Displays the tally frame on the selected display.

  • Tally Hide – Removes the tally frame from the display.

When showing a tally, several parameters can be configured:

  • Display ID – Defines on which display the tally frame will appear.

  • Label – Optional text displayed with the tally indicator.

  • Color – The color of the frame used to indicate the system state.

  • Frame Thickness – Defines the thickness of the displayed frame.

The tally indicator is rendered as a frame around the screen and is typically used to clearly signal the operational status of a machine to operators.

This can be particularly helpful in environments where multiple systems run the same applications, making it difficult to distinguish which system is currently active or in use.

For example, when several Unreal Engine instances are running across primary and backup machines, tally indicators can be used to mark which system is currently active. This helps prevent operators from accidentally interacting with a live system.

Another common use case is during large conferences or live presentations where multiple PowerPoint systems are running simultaneously. Operators may need to access machines during the show to update files or make adjustments. A tally indicator allows them to quickly see which system is currently live or active, reducing the risk of interfering with the running presentation.
