Using Categories
Categories help organize objects and elements within a Grid Studio project. They allow users to visually group related elements, apply consistent colors, and filter objects within the Project Tree.
Categories are especially useful in large projects where many objects, timelines, workflows, and other elements are present.
How to create categories is explained in Project → Project Settings → Categories
Assigning Categories
Categories are assigned through the Inspector.
When an object or element is selected, a Category icon appears in the top-right corner of the Inspector header.

Clicking this icon opens a list of all available categories. Selecting a category assigns it to the currently selected object or element.

Categories can be assigned to many types of items, including:
Project Tree objects
Timeline blocks
Workflow elements
Nodes
Other editor elements
Categories in the Project Tree

Once a category is assigned, the category icon appears next to the object name in the Project Tree.
The icon is displayed in the color defined for that category. This provides a quick visual indicator that helps identify related objects.
In large projects, categories can significantly improve readability and navigation.
Filtering by Category
Categories can also be used as filters inside the Project Tree.

Once objects have categories assigned, the Project Tree filter options allow users to display only objects belonging to specific categories.
This makes it easier to focus on particular subsystems within complex projects.
Examples:
tracking system objects
lighting fixtures
calibration tools
debugging objects
Using Category Colors
Objects and elements can also use the category color as their display color.
When enabled, the element will automatically adopt the color defined by its category instead of using its own individual color.
This allows consistent color schemes across large projects.
To enable this:
Select the object or element
Open the Inspector
Go to the Display section
Set Color Mode to Category Color

This works not only for objects in the Project Tree, but also for elements such as:
Timeline cues
Workflow actions
Nodes
Other editor elements
Using category colors is particularly helpful when organizing complex systems where multiple subsystems need to be visually distinguished.
