Categories

Overview

The Categories tab allows users to define and manage categories used throughout a project.

Categories provide a simple way to organize, label, and visually group objects and elements within Grid Studio. They can be used across different parts of the system, such as:

  • Timeline blocks

  • Project organization

  • Filtering objects in views like the Project Tree

  • Visual grouping of elements within interfaces

Each category can define a name, initials, and a color, allowing users to quickly identify and organize elements within larger projects.

Creating Categories

New categories can be created using the Add (+) button in the Categories tab.

To create a category:

  1. Click the + icon.

  2. A new category entry will be added to the list.

  3. Configure the category properties.

Projects can define as many categories as needed depending on how elements should be organized.

Category Properties

Each category provides several properties that define how it appears and is used.

Name

The Name defines the full name of the category.

This name is used in interfaces where categories are referenced, such as when assigning categories to objects or timeline blocks.

Initial

The Initial defines a short abbreviation for the category.

This abbreviation can be used in compact interfaces where displaying the full category name is not practical.

Color

The Color defines the visual color associated with the category.

Many elements that support categories can use this color for visual grouping. For example, timeline blocks can inherit the Category Color instead of using a custom color.

Purpose

Categories help structure and organize complex projects.

By assigning colors and identifiers to categories, users can quickly identify related elements and maintain consistent organization across different parts of the system.
